Murderdolls Interview - Big Day Out

c. January 2003

MELODY: Hi, it's Melody Mars here. Backstage at the Sydney Big Day Out. I'm here with a couple of the guys from Murderdolls. G'Day guys, how's it going?
WEDNESDAY13: Hello.
MELODY: You guys have played all ready?
JOEY: No, we're just getting ready to.
MELODY: So what's the preparation for getting ready to play?
JOEY: Drinking.
WEDNESDAY13: Drinking.
MELODY: Drinking?
WEDNESDAY13: Drinking, and uh, listening to KISS.
JOEY: We can't play unless we listen to 'All American Man'
WEDNESDAY13: Yeah, we listen to KISS before we go on stage, it's our ritual.
MELODY: And any bands that you are touring with, that you are interested in listening to?
WEDNESDAY13 (thinks): No.
MELODY: None?!
JOEY: We are pretty much the sore thumb on this. We're the outcasts. So we don't actually have any friends on this tour. I think we like it kind of like that. Because we don't really have anything in common with any of these bands to tell you the truth.
MELODY: Really?
JOEY: Well, I do like The Foo Fighters. And I like Jane's Addiction.
WEDNESDAY13: Yeah
MELODY: So, what's it like being on tour with a whole load of guys that you don't have anything in common with?
JOEY: I think it's cool, you know. Because we are here for the freaks. We represent all the people who are like more into the heavier style, and more of the traditional rock and roll, and more of the out of control and the out of control music, so we're definitely here to represent for that side, you know, cos everyone else is kind of more alternative, and you know, the mainstream. So we're pretty much a...
MELODY: And has that been sort of noticeable in the audiences, yeah? And what do you want from the audience? When you go out there tonight, what do you expect?
(Pause)
MELODY (cont): Literally guys, do you want people to rip their skin?
WEDNESDAY13: No, no...no, I mean, we just want people to have a good time, and uh, you know, we're not a band that you just sit there and cross your arms and go, 'Cool Beat', and we get everybody into it, and you know, it's very much...our shows a big part with the audience. We get them just as physical as we are, so...
MELODY: Well, you are pretty wild out there on stage. What...is that a personality thing? Is it a performance? What happens when you go on stage?
WEDNESDAY13: We like to entertain people. I mean, we don't go on stage...we go on stage to play and put on a show which I think has been lacking in rock music for years, and years and years. Everybody plays it safe now, and it's boring. They wear jeans, and t-shirts, and you know, we're just sort of doing the things we grew up on...bands like KISS and Alice Cooper. Sort of more entertainment value to music, so you get more than just the music. You get a show. You get visuals. Everything.
MELODY: And then what happens after the show? Give us some gossip. Like, you are not hanging out with the rest of the crew, what do you guys do?
JOEY: We terrorise the rest of the bands.
(WEDNESDAY13 laughs)
WEDNESDAY13: We could just stand around in corners and scare them.
MELODY: And how have you found Australia?
JOEY (still on the last question): That might not work today though. We might be in jail.
WEDNESDAY13: Yeah.
MELODY: So, how have you found Australia...and the Australian audiences, and the crew?
WEDNESDAY13: Great, yeah
JOEY: Really cool.
WEDNESDAY13: Considering that I called home and it's just snowed. It's quite a night and day sort of thing.
MELODY: You must get pretty hot in those outfits?
JOEY: Actually, no.
WEDNESDAY13: This is...we gotta have this...
MELODY: Their air conditioned...
WEDNESDAY13: It doesn't matter how hot it is, this is part of the attire.
MELODY: Yeah. Alright. Okay, that's all we have time for guys, but thanks very much, and I hope you have a great show, and we will wrap it up then.
