The Top 50 Rock Bands Of All Time (As Voted For By You)
Guitarist (Issue 225)
July 2002
Rock! The name alone conjures up visions of excess. An excess of volume, an excess of groupies, of cars and guitars, of pristine jets, an excess of drink and drugs and bad behaviour - plus an excess of libido, testosterone and even a little too much hair.
But during the past three decades or so - these young men - many now middle aged gents and too many gone altogether - have brought us a raft of great music, an excess of which would be impossible to its many fans.
Whether rock began when Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones combined their rifftatic talents, or whether it goes back to Bill Haley and his kiss curled Comets, who cares. But as Brian May said recently in this very magazine - "When I was a kid, rock music expressed generation perfectly, and the whole world revolved around it."
Whether your brand of rock is Maiden or Metallica, Stereophonics or Stones, Brian's right, it's a music that becomes a way of life - we dress like our heroes, grow our hair like them, learn their songs, and copy their greatest licks.
Sometimes we even vote for our favourite rock bands of all time. The following 50 are yours. Enjoy.
Devon may not be rock central, but in Matt Bellamy it has spawned one of the most exciting guitarists of the moment. Of course those custom aluminium super-axes are an added bonus.
