Muse Interview - Lille 2001

c. June 2001

MATTHEW (holding a camcorder): It's on zoom by itself
DOMINIC (leaning over CHRISTOPHER from the other end of the couch): There's the zoom button
(CONCERT FOOTAGE IS FROM ZENITH AU DE LILLE 28TH JUNE 2001)
DOMINIC: I think we've always had like a mixed bag of mixed sizes of gigs in number. The last tour we did, was doing something like thirty people, but big places like 3000 to 5000 people. The we would go up to Scandinavia and play to something like three hundred people. So it's always been really variable.
MATTHEW: On the 17th we came over and did a gig in Cherbourg. Was it Cherbourg? And there was no one there. But we got the free drinks, and we smuggled loads of, what was it?
CHRISTOPHER: Cigarettes
MATTHEW: Loads of cigarettes and alcohol back, and sold them all to our friends.

DOMINIC: I think...I don't know what(?)...this is quite a big place, so we will see how it feels tonight, but we have done a lot bigger than this (laughter from MATTHEW and CHRISTOPHER), but often if it's too big...I mean like, not our own gigs. we've supported bands and played bigger places, but often if it's too big, then you can feel disconnected to the crowd and sort of vice versa.

MATTHEW: Also, also, also, also...on our...when we did our European tour, when we came to France we played um, we played The Bikini in Toulouse, and La Cigale in Paris...they are quite small, well they are quite small venues, well they are quite middle venues, so um...so we thought this time we would play some larger ones to see how that feels.
(CONCERT FOOTAGE)
MATTHEW: I think, I think it's like uh, do have to play a lot of gigs, and a lot of festivals...and I think, I think when you...cos we used to go to a lot of festivals, to see bands play...to see bands play whenever we could...I think when you go and see, you star to get a feel of what you do, if you have a chance to play on stage. So now we play on stage...

MATTHEW: Life moves very fast, you know, it just goes (makes a whooshing sound) past like that. Do you notice that? Do you notice that? I notice that. I think life is like, it's so fast. For me, it's like...I think for some reason, we get the sensation of long time, but the reality is very very very short. And I think that it's so short that you've got to try to cram as much in as possible before you die. And this is a good way of doing it, being in a band or something, so that you are travelling around, and that sort of thing, so it's a good way to experience a lot. Fast.
(CONCERT FOOTAGE)
MATTHEW: I like singing...I like singing at full range you know and everything, because erm, I'm not sure why...it makes me feel funny. Sort of a bit weird. You know, but I think I can sing very high. Erm, I went to see, uh...once...someone took a photograph of my vocal cords, and said they were 'like a woman'.
(CONCERT FOOTAGE)
DOMINIC: We will mature with time, just like most bands do. So I think the longer, the more time we spend doing these songs, and being on the road, and you just learn more about life, and how to do what you are doing. I think the second album is mature in those ways.
