Corey Taylor debuts Gold-en Comic Series
May 2013
Stone Sour and Slipknot frontman, Corey Taylor, launches his first comic four-parter House Of Gold & Bones
NOT CONTENT WITH JUST BEING THE emphatic frontman of two of metal's most iconic acts. Stone Sour / Slipknot's Corey Taylor is now proving himself in the realm of comicbooks. His debut series, set in an alternate world, dramatises the short story that featured in Stone Sour s epic House Of Gold & Bones two-part album, released in October 2012 and April 2013.
The tale features art by Richard P Clark (whose previous credits include work for Marvel and DC Comics), with covers by Steve Morris, Jason Shawn Alexander and Kyle Hotz. House Of Gold & Bones is being released in four parts through Dark Horse Comics, with the first issue available on 17 April, with subsequent chapters appearing monthly. Bizarre caught up with Corey to chat about the metal mans latest venture,..
What's your graphic novel series about?
It's an adaptation of the story I wrote for the two House Of Gold & Bones albums.
Its main character, The Human, wakes up in a strange world and is assaulted by various characters. There are two antagonists called Black John and Allen, and a protagonist named Peckinpah. The story is all about choice and the different paths your life goes down whenever you make certain decisions.
What's the inspiration behind it?
I wanted to blend a sci-fi fantasy world with real issues that people can relate to. The characters' back-stories are derived from the obstacles and challenges that both my friends and I have gone through in life. You reach a point where you have to make a choice about what's going to happen with the rest of your life, and I think this current generation is scared of that. Hopefully this story will show people that we're stronger when we take control of our own destinies, rather than not living life to the fullest.
What made you choose Richard P Clark as the artist?
He sets you in this fantastic world, but he also draws in such a way that you can envisage it happening in reality. I wanted that balance of awesome, stylised comic book artwork and the feeling that the story could be unfolding in a movie, on TV or in front of you.
How much of a thrill was it to see him visualise your story?
I was so excited. Ever since he showed me the character sketches I've been jumping up and down, and running around showing my friends and family, saying: 'Look at this, it's gonna be fucking awesome!' I never dreamed I'd be able to write a comic and have the right team to make it a reality. From a fans standpoint I'm still on cloud nine right now.
Who are your own comicbook heroes?
I'm a huge fan of Garth Ennis, Warren Ellis, and Grant Morrison. They take the medium and kick the walls down. I stopped reading comics for a couple of years because the writing was suffering. Then a friend turned me onto Ennis' Preacher series, and it's now one of my favourites. It presents a different take on the whole Christian / Judaism mythos, and looked at what it could mean to be able to dance in and out of the supernatural and the preternatural. Plus it was really dark and funny.
Finally, we should mention that you're performing at Download this year (14-16 June) with both Slipknot and Stone Sour. Won't that be knackering?
It's going to be, yeah! Last time I did that was at Rock In Rio In 2011, and it kicked the shit out of me. I'm a sadomasochist jumping in with both lands. Download is one of my favourite festivals - call me a greedy bastard, but if I can play two of its three days, then screw it! It's just me adding my name a little more to the Download legend...
