Muse Japan Tour History - Interview Transcriptions

(Note - these are a collection of short interviews. The first longer one, can be read here. These date from the early 2000s onwards)

CLIP 1
c. August 2000

DOMINIC: Um, well Glastonbury and T In The Park, Glastonbury was pretty special, cos it is sort of down where we are from. It's where we live, and where we grew up. It's in that area, so we've always gone there when we were young, just to watch bands, so...we had a really good festival this year, as well. There was like, lots of people there, and it was like on a big stage, so...it was pretty magic.
MATTHEW: Where we come from, um, where we come from in England, bands very rarely tour there. Not very often. So the only chance we got to see many bands from around the world, is to go to festivals like Glastonbury, and Glastonbury was very close to home. So it was very special to play there, because it felt like we really were a proper band, and a real band.

CLIP 2
c. Early 2000 (judging by the Japanese translation at the bottom of the screen)

DOMINIC: Alright...
MATTHEW: Hello...I'm called Matthew
DOMINIC: I'm called Dom
CHRISTOPHER: I'm called Chris
MATTHEW: And we are collectively known as Muse...it's our first album. For me it's my first proper...proper...um offering to the globe (you can hear DOMINIC giggling under his breath) and it's er...you know...it's a starting point. And I think uh, hopefully we are going to create some interesting music in the next ten years. Or something. And um...it's a beginning. It's coming together. The vision. And um, I think towards the end of last year, it was like we were finishing the first part of our life, and then since January this year, things have been very different, and the music we have been starting to create this year has been...I wouldn't say it has been very different, but it's been more focused slightly, and it's been um...I mean, I am looking forward to the next album, but I don't want to say it's going to be different, or it's going to be the same. I think it's going to be Muse, but it will be a progression from where we are.

~ The second question, which seems to have been cut, is about playing Japan (if the Japanese at the bottom of the screen is anything to go by)

MATTHEW: You know, I thought it was really good. I was happy with it. You know, cos I thought there wasn't going to be many people there. Cos no-one knows us here. We never played here before. I thought there would be like fifty people sort of going, "Hmm, what's that?". But it was full. There was a lot of people. I don't know how many, but it seemed like the whole place was full, and everyone was into it, and it started off quite quiet, so I was a bit nervous, but I think as...as we started to relax, the crowd started to get, you know, more interested and more happy, and sort of jumping around and stuff. So, we had a good time.

CLIP 3

MATTHEW: Good.
DOMINIC: Yeah, it was really good. It was uh...
MATTHEW: Surprise
DOMINIC: I want to say everyone was very enthusiastic, I think so. It was very hot, the stage. I think Matt had fainted.
MATTHEW: (?) Passed out. It was good. The crowd were like...when we last played in Tokyo, the audience were quite sort of, quite relaxed, and it was fine. It was quite sort of rock and roll.
DOMINIC: And the scenery always helps as well, with Mount Fuji in the background. So it was nice to do that. Festivals with a nice background.

CLIP 4

MATTHEW: The band we are in, Muse, it changes all the time. Everything. Everything about how we feel, and what we want out of it, changes. And sometimes it can change from one day to the next day, and um, I think there has been many many many changes. Too many to talk about. I think some...it has ranged from playing certain gigs a certain way, in another way, or how we write songs, and how we are thinking of making the next album and stuff. I think we have all changed. We have all grown up a lot as well.
DOMINIC: It's always been superb. I think it's generally gotten better like every show. Every show has been better in its own way, and tonight which is the last one, was particularly one of the best. Because we did like an acoustic thing, and then like a heavy rock thing...
