(MUSE) Big Day Out 2004

2004

Q: I'm here with Muse, how's it going?
DOMINIC: Great thanks
MATTHEW: Real good, real nice. Cheers. How are you?
Q: I'm doing okay, I think. Not bad for an amateur. You have been nominated at the Brits for "The Best Rock Act", how are you feeling about that?
DOMINIC: It's pretty cool I think, you know. It's quite cool. It's quite nice. You know, The Brit's is like the big kind of UK Awards that your mum watches, you know so it's kind of cool to be nominated for that. We're actually playing there as well so, but it's all a bit...it's just like the biggest thing. I mean it's nice when like when if you get nominated for an award where it's kind of voted for by the public is quite nice. But I got a feeling that the Brit's is all like an industry panel.
Q: Different to the Top Of The Pop's Awards
MATTHEW (somewhat inaudible): I suppose so(?)
Q (laughs): Fantastic...I noted on your website is that one of the popular message board threads, was about Matt's Hair...
MATTHEW: Erm...I don't know actually it's pretty bad at the moment...
(DOMINIC motions for MATTHEW to lean forward as he's far away from the mic)
DOMINIC (to the interviewer): It should be about your hair
MATTHEW: It should be about your hair, yeah...I used to have blue hair, then I had red hair, then I had blonde hair, and now I've got this kind if manky brown black hair...
Q: Are you a Leo?
MATTHEW: What, star sign?
Q: Yes
MATTHEW: Why'd you ask that?
Q: I just want to know...
MATTHEW: What, you mean seeking the centre of attention? That kind of thing?
(Laughter)
Q: Your words, not mine...
MATTHEW: I'm a Gemini. That's like even worse.
Q: You're right. I take that back.
MATTHEW: What are you?
Q: Aquarius. It was my birthday, just two days ago.
MATTHEW: Happy birthday.
Q: Thank you very much...anyway, as Liam Gallagher said on "Live Forever", it's important to have good hair as a rock star. Do you think that's right?
DOMINIC: I think it's important...
MATTHEW: He obviously does...
(LAUGHTER)
(MATTHEW sits with his feet on the small table)
Q: So, if I was to say gym or beer, what would you pick?
DOMINIC: Gym or...?
Q: Gym or beer. Going to the gym or drinking some beer?
CHRISTOPHER: Drink beer. Go down the gym. Burn it off. Drink some more beer. Go down the gym. Burn it off.
MATTHEW: How about get pissed, and then go down the gym.
Q: Ah...is that kind of your inspiration then?
MATTHEW: What, getting pissed and going down the gym?
Q: Yeah
MATTHEW: Yeah, that's it. That's what the whole album's about basically.
Q: Who or what do you worship as a performer?
MATTHEW: Erm...I think these guys are really good (motions to a band that can be heard playing, but sadly as the sound is so bad, we can't hear who it is), Strokes are really good...Queens Of The Stone Age*...good, good band...what else...um, I think Flaming Lips are great.
Q: And who else have you caught while you've been on tour?
DOMINIC: We've seen Mars Volta last night, that was great. Seen The Strokes a couple of times, they were really good...um...
CHRISTOPHER: Aphex Twin*, that was pretty intense.
DOMINIC: One of the most berserk things I have ever seen, but we saw...
Q: How was it berserk?
DOMINIC: Just random, intense, hard, gabber drum and bass. But then it went really weird. Just random beats and sounds and things you know, if you listen to...
Q: So you felt a bit assaulted afterwards?
DOMINIC: I felt kind of drained, tired. I went straight to bed.
Q: Uh huh. Is there anyone that you think should not be making music?
(Long silence, somewhat awkward)
Q: You can use initials if you like
DOMINIC: Will Young. Some of those pop artists you know. Some of those "Pop Idol" people because...
Q: Did you catch the whole first series?
DOMINIC: I didn't actually, no. I didn't watch any of it, so I've never watched any of them, but I've just seen like the outcome, and er, it's just a bit embarrassing really isn't it?
Q: Yeah, that's one way of describing it...and um, if you actually had to go on Pop Idol what song would you sing? What would your audition be?
MATTHEW: What kind of song you mean?
Q: Yeah
MATTHEW: What cover song? Um, I'd play something by Abba. Probably, um, "Waterloo" or something like that, or maybe a Queen song like "We Are The Champions"
(Everyone laughs)
Q: Okay, are you big Queen fans then?
MATTHEW: Mmmm...to an extent yeah, I think some songs yeah. I think when it stars to get a bit limp wristed, I think we kind of look the other way and pretend we didn't see it, but no I think they're a good band. Very great band. Great band.
DOMINIC: I like them. I think they are cool.
Q: And are you enjoying the tour so far?
DOMINIC: It's been great so far yeah. This first day...this first time we've done Big Day Out, and first time we've ever been to New Zealand as well, and that was an amazing place. And you know, here in Australia it's been great and there's lots of kind of days off in between gigs, and so we've been going to like beaches and going out on boats in the harbour and stuff. So it's been superb so far.
Q: Excellent. And um strange question, do you have a favourite saying? Like a mantra, or something you want to talk about?
(Pause)
DOMINIC:...Just nice...
Q (laughs): What? "Nice?"
DOMINIC: I think I say "nice" quite a lot.
Q: Okay, excellent
MATTHEW: "What goes around, comes around" that kind of thing?
Q: Yeah...
MATTHEW: "What goes around, comes around".
(Laughter)
Q: Excellent. Okay, well look, thank you for today, and I hope the rest of the tour is fantastic.
MATTHEW/DOMINIC: Thank you very much. Cheers.

Notes
Queen Of The Stone Age: Josh Homme would drunkenly insult Muse in an onstage meltdown when they headlined a festival.
Gabber: a subgenre of hardcore techno and a Dutch youth subculture that emerged in the early 1990s, characterized by fast tempos (\(160\text{--}220\) BPM), distorted heavy kick drums - something a drummer like Dominic would notice immediately.
Aphex Twin: Dominic appears to be a fan, he mentioned them in a top songs blurb in a feature in Modern Drummer (article/interview to come)
