(MURDERDOLLS) It's a life, but not as you know it

It's not every day a member of Slipknot calls you up and asks you to join his offshoot band, but Wednesday Thirteen took it all in his stride.
Now installed as the singer with Joey Jordison's second band, goth-glam metal outfit Murderdolls, he says he was glad to join up but was never in awe of the 'Knot's drummer.
'I wasn't a big fan of Slipknot, although I knew who they were obviously,' says Wednesday. 'But I wasn't really nervous about meeting him or anything.
'It was really easy to work on the level, we became friends because I wasn't intimidated'.
At the time, the masked men of Slipknot were nu-metal pioneers, touring the world promoting their second album, Iowa, and half the teenagers in the western world sported one of their hoodies.
'They were huge, but I never thought of Joey as this big star or anything.
'I was in a band called the Frankenstein Dragqueens and Joey heard our record and he called me up and said, "I have this band I'm doing which is similar to what you're doing, do you want to work with us?"
Joey switched from drums to guitar for the new outfit and Wednesday originally joined as the bass player and moved to vocals when the original singer left.
'It was awesome that the opportunity came up,' he says. 'It was an opportunity I had been waiting for my whole life.
'We got it, did it, toured the whole world three times, it's been busy, busy, busy but I love it.
'It's a dream band. All the dudes are just rock and roll, we're just all on the same page. I've been in bands before where one guy didn't have a clue, but this a whole band.'
Murderdolls certainly live up to their name and image - it's make up, tattoos and leather all the way.
'People think we're ready to go on stage the whole time when we're in our regular clothes,' says Wednesday. 'But we're always dressed thIs way. We live it every single day.
'I come from North Carolina and my clothes don't go down that good there, but I've learned not to take a lot of hassle.
'In our old band we used to wear dressed and lipstick and play redneck bars just to provoke them, so that's allowed me to do what I want to do now.'
He's been a rocker for as long as he can remember.
'I was 11 or 12 maybe when I first got into music. I started checking out Motley Crue and Twisted Sister, and I started playing guitar when I was 13'
'I'm covered in horror tattoos and things like that - that's what I grew up with, rock and roll and horror movies.
'That's really down to Alice Cooper because he made me realize you could do both - it's rock but it's like watching Dracula perform.'
However, underneath it all, Wednesday is not always the shock merchant he appears.
The basement at his house is filled with his toy collection - 'I have monsters, Addams Family toys, GI Joe, everything from my childhood'- and he's devoted to his wife and daughter.
'My daughter Zoe is five' he says fondly. 'She hasn't seen us play live but she's in love with all the other band members which annoys me to no end.
'Being away from them is horrible, it sucks - that's why I do occasionally get depressed on tour.'
 All together now, aaah.

Murderdolls play at the Wedgewood Rooms, Southsea, on Wednesday.
